COVID SPIKE TO UNSAFE LEVELS

Death and destruction fill the news hour, that’s all you ever seem to hear. This next statement may shock you, as much as it did me, that we want to hear the negovive news ?! We are drawn to depressing sad news stories, disaster sells. Turns out our brains are wired to like the negative stories. The internet is filled with studies showing this very fact. An old line that I’ve heard many times and I’m sure you have as well;

“If it bleeds, it leads”

Meaning that the bad stories get front page news, while the positive good news stories get buried on page 22. Negative stories are more impactful on our brains, we remember them longer than positive ones. They tend to skew even positive stories to a negative news headlines just to get you to click the link (did it work by the way ?) or turn that page. So it’s not just you thinking the news is negative skewed, because it is !! It may not be our fault that we tend to look for negative news stories. We all love the positive uplifting stories on social media. Animals saving there owners, cute cuddly pics and story’s. Happy endings in war stories and cancer battles. The list goes on for the happiness we think we want to read. Just yesterday we stopped listening to the radio on the way to school because of all the doom and gloom negativity it was spewing in our lives.

Why we like negative news??

Is it people want to see that someone is having a worse day than them?

Something exciting about bad news ??

Or maybe there life isn’t so bad after watching the six o’clock news ?

Ok everyone is tired of all the crappy depressing news and negativity in the world. So what would happen if the news only reported positive, up lifting news. The stuff that gives you the “happy” feeling. Well, a Russian news site did just that. The City Reporter tried an experiment and only had positive news and stories to the front page for an entire day. They found any and all positive spins in the negative stories. Happy heart warming stories filled the pages of the news that day. What did the readers think of that? Well, no one wanted to read that happy stuff. The City Reporter lost 66% of its normal readership in that one day.

COVID SPIKES OUT OF CONTROL HEADLINE, DID YOU START READING BECAUSE OF THAT HEAD LINE?

I’ve noticed with Covid-19 news that there seems to be an upward spike as soon as they say the cases are going down. So is either a result of everyone thinking numbers are better so we can slack off a bit, then we see a spike ? Or do they like to give some positive news and then hammer it to us with negative? OR is it just skewed that way. Nothing like keeping a population scared and panicked so you can control them. Over the Labor Day long weekend in Alberta we had a huge spike of cases, well, according to the news we did. That’s how they skewed it. Some of the headlines were;

“More than 600 new cases over the long weekend causing concern with Alberta residents”

“Alberta COVID-19 cases rise to May levels; Hinshaw says ‘absolutely critical’ to stay home if sick“

“I’m concerned about the continued rise in cases,” Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, said during Tuesday’s COVID-19 update.

So here is the POSITIVE part they left out, to put this in perspective for Alberta to get that 619 rise in case numbers; to a active case total at 1692 . All this over the four day long weekend they administered almost 50,000 COVID tests. Now, Yes in May 2020 we did have roughly the same increase in daily numbers this is true but, In May Alberta was administering 4000 a day a far cry from today’s 12,000 tests a day.

🔹The month of May our daily active case growth ranged from 60-130 A DAY THE ENTIRE MONTH OF MAY. On an average of 4000 tests per day

🔹Even conservatively say 90 new cases a day in May, that means 2.2% of the tests came back positive.

🔹 So now ALBERTA news blows up over a 619 case increase over 4 days with 50,000 tests ??? That’s 1.2% ? THIS IS A WIN PEOPLE, not negative news at all, and here’s why

619 is a lot and I would like it at zero but, in perspective, we have increased COVID testing from 4000 a day to approx 12000 a day. We are doing 3 times the amount of tests and our daily percentage increase went down 100% . If we were still at May levels then over the long weekend, with that amount of tests administered and percentages we should of seen 4085 new cases over Labor Day, we had 619. This is a positive news story, not negative.

Dont worry, everything is not as negative as it seems. The world is just spun that way. Hang in there, we will all get through this together❤️. I would like to believe the news leans to the negative to spur on change. To get us fueled up to fight the next big fight. One could argue that negative news (bad news) is the important news. Talking about a hurricane that just reached land or wild fires burning out of control can help to get financial aid gears turning. Some times it’s just better to hit the off button.

But sadly we all know it’s about money and to spin their own political agenda.
