DAD, I AM SO GRATEFUL ( 6 min read)
Many things I am grateful for in this life. I really have no idea where to start. I’m grateful for life lessons others have taught me, I’m grateful for life lessons I’ve taught myself even more. One of the most things I’m grateful for is my dad, he taught me how NOT to be a father. One memory that stands out from others is when I was 12 and It was an outdoor hockey practice. Snow was just starting to twinkle down from the night sky, the boys and I were joking around having fun and playing keep away with the puck at the end of practice. Coming around behind the net, I lost an edge on my skates and crashed into the boards, my team mate who was right behind me fell as well and crashed right in to my left leg.
Something was not right, instantly I felt a burning sensation in my ankle.
“Get up”
my dad yells from the side line you can feel the conviction in his voice, so of course I do. I hobble off the ice in a pain filled blindness that I’ve never felt before. I manage to get my equipment off, packed up and I toss my bag on my shoulder. With tears in my eyes, I made it to the car and put my bag in the trunk. We are driving home and my dad says “your ok, just a twist, I’m not taking you to the hospital so suck it up”
I get inside, undress and pack my bag “maybe it does feel a bit better” I thought to myself as I hobble around. Only thinking this to try and trick my mind into healing my ankle. My dad should yell “QUIT BEING A BABY” I had a few Tylenol, we watched some tv and we’re going to bed. I painfully hop up the stairs to the second floor on one foot. I grab my pillow and blanket to sleep on the floor in my parents room, something I did quite often. Why ? I don’t know, I felt comfort sleeping on the floor in their room. When my dad was out of town I’d jump in my parents bed and fall asleep with my mom, something I really enjoyed. And I think she did too, I did this till I was about 18. Yes a little strange looking back on it, but I look back on those times of reading and watching tv in my moms bed as some of the best. With my mom not living a full life it’s like the universe knew for me to enjoy every moment with her.
The sun rises in the morning and so did the swelling my ankle was HUGE .
My mom said to my dad “I’m taking him for X-rays” my dad looked mad and didn’t want her too, but finally says “ok good idea” we wait at the hospital for 4 hours in the emergency room it was a compound fracture, broken in 2 places. The doctor says to me with astonishment in his voice “I literally have no idea how you slept with all the pain, it must have been excruciating with the bone rubbing together” Well it was, but I slept, as I’ve said before I can sleep anywhere. Well I left with a cast that day and a couple pins. We were 80% finished the season that year and undefeated, that is, untill I broke my ankle. We ended up losing 7 games, I never did make it back that year and we lost in the playoffs. Very sad the team lost but sure made me feel important that we went undefeated till I got hurt 😋
My dad never mentioned anything about that again, never an apology or anything. It’s like her just blocked it out and forgot about it.
IM VERY GRATEFUL FOR MY DAD, HE TAUGHT ME HOW TO BE A DAD.
