SEPARATION ANXIETY ( 8min read)

I’ve been thinking lots lately about September, why September?? I’m optimistic that kids go back to schools. Not to normal but at least our kids go back. They need to be in school, they just don’t learn the same at home... I’m sure all parents can agree 👇🏻👇🏻

Lee has been working from home with our boys since March. Doing her job daily and homeschooling, all a while our 4 dogs have been in their glory, constantly getting snuggled day and night. Our four legged friends have gotten the most walks they have ever had, sometimes 2-3 times a day. Charlie our white lab has even slimmed down quite a bit. So I often think what will happen when September rolls around and the house is empty for 9 hours a day. Well, Separation Anxiety is when your dog exhibits extreme stress from the time you leave him alone until you return, normally this affects puppies and not older dogs but, it can affect older dogs as well, so I’m kind nervous. Very destructive behaviour can result along with these symptoms,

🔹accidents in the house

🔹barking or howling

🔹 pacing or shaking

🔹 chewing things

🔹 trying to escape

All of these and many more symptoms of stress and panic for the dog. Think of it as a panic attack but for dogs. I am a little worried about SPCA’s around the world will get over ran and flooded when the world will go back to normal, not the normal we once knew, that, I fear is long gone. The new normal will be very similar and also very different, maybe with masks for a unspecified amount of time. Extra cleaning procedures for businesses. Limits to the amount of people allowed to shop and arrows directing our every move. While everyone was at home they had some down time and thought – hey let’s get a dog !!

All these dogs being bought, what happens when the population has to go back to work? And all these cute little puppies are left at home to there own devices. What happens when people are working longer hours and simply just don’t have time for there little bundles of puppy fur that they bought amidst the bordom of COVID-19 quarantine. Separation Anxiety affects dogs, not really cats, yes our cats love us and come for pets and snuggles every day on multiple occasions but, I feel cats would like the peace and quite and to get their, yes THEIR house back to normal. If you own a cat you know exactly what I mean by this statement.

Although older dogs can develop Separation Anxiety it usually affects young dogs. So all you new dog owners PLEASE don’t dismiss this as something to worry about later, prevent puppy separation anxiety before it starts. I know it’s very hard right now as life’s daily routines have changed. But still try to leave the house every two days, at least, with out your dog. Put him or her in kennel while you are gone, go out and come back. Keep a little routine, if you don’t you’ll have one stressed puppy on your hands😳

Always remember being a dog parent is a life long commitment. It’s not something you abandon when times get hard or when the dog gets difficult because you didn’t train them proper as puppies. I fear that many people will surrendered Fido when they become destructive or to difficult, or when they become to much work for them.
