I was driving in to work this week and listening to my favourite radio station 102.3 Now Radio. In the morning are a pair of radio hosts, the Crash and Mars Show. You can check out there pod casts HERE . They have a third voice in the back ground “the ginge”.

The trio of Crash, Mars and the Ginge keeps me laughing everyday also they cover some interesting topics to get calls and texts, interaction if you will, by viewers. They have incredible chemistry which is why the show is such a success. The Ginge adds his touch of flare to the show that only he can do. This week one of the topics was what have you swam with? One lady phoned in and said something I couldn’t believe. She said when she was on holidays her family swam with the dolphins, her being pregnant could not go in while anyone else was in the water for fear the dolphins would protect her and possibly hurt the other swimmers. Dolphins can sense when a women is pregnant, so everyone had to leave the water before she went in and swam alone ? She said they would come up to her tummy and kiss it ?

True or false let’s dive into this.

The same way an ultrasound works is kind of what dolphins do in the water to navigate. Dolphins emit a high pitched sound and listen to its return echo, by doing this they can find shapes and navigate through their underwater world with ease. Ultrasound is the same premise, sounds not heard by the human ear are sent and received to create an image of the little baby growing. Also not all dolphins act this way to pregnant ladies, yep you guessed it, just the girls. The male dolphins make a run for the hills while females stay, scan and are very curious.

But is it possible that they know a women is carrying a baby?

In an article by Live Science they interviewed Lori Marino, a neuroscientist at Emory University in Atlanta who studies cetacean intelligence and this was her take on it.

I think it's extremely plausible [dolphins] would be able to detect a fetus. However, you'd have to really do a well-controlled study to make a definitive statement,” she cautioned.

Buzzing, a form of eco location that dolphins use. It’s more precise and zoned in to one specific area or they do it to contact or communicate with other dolphins. They swim up and sometimes physically touch the other object and buzz. Could this be the kissing that the reader on Crash and Mars show was talking about? When the dolphins swim up and put there snout on the bellies of women carrying a fetus. I guess it sounds like a squeaky door sound when heard. I’m sure we have all heard that sound before. There is something so cute about a baby dolphin👇🏻

Malcolm Nicolson, a history of medicine professor at the University of Glasgow in Scotland. Malcolm agreed that dolphins may be able to detect a woman's pregnancy. A dolphin might well be able to detect a difference in echo profiles or the pattern of sounds returned by echolocation. Dolphins might even have the ability to detect a fetal heartbeat in a woman. Not just sensing a baby, but they also might be able to get a mental image in there brain of the baby. But Nicolson, who wrote a book on the development of obstetric ultrasound, noted that this was only speculation. So I think it’s about time that a study is done on this matter. I think it’s entirely possible that dolphins are able to sense a fetus or pregnant woman.

Would dolphins protect the baby?

The lady on the Crash and Mars show said the dolphins would protect her, so no one else was allowed in the water at the same time. One article I found said that some people believe that dolphins will protect other mammals or the weakest one from predators. So it makes sense that, if the other dolphins perceive imminent danger then they would protect the weakest one, that being the pregnant lady. Although if any of you know any pregnant ladies, they are the toughest beings on planet earth. So maybe too many humans in the water at once would stress and scare the dolphins into protection mode. Also it said some believe that dolphins have the ability to heal mammals with there sonar or echo. Again nothing concrete, merely speculation.

As boys we definitely got into trouble as children, always looking for something to do or play with. It’s like our hearts just told us to get in trouble. We had a uncontrollable urge to be mischievous, like Gollum to a ring, we had trouble to cause. Don’t think of me any less for this confessional, I was a child after all.

You always hear people say boys brains are just wired differently, it would seem to be true from my experience. As boys we didnt have to look for trouble it just found us. If you’ve ever seen the tv show Malcolm In the middle, this could be an exact replica of what can go wrong. We just fell into it .... it found us

Around the young age of 10

We would go shoot golf balls in the school field, until of course, we heard a smash and we all ran as fast as we could. We hit the ball a little too hard, or should I say I hit the ball too hard and smashed the window on a house but, it never stopped us and enjoyed it for years to come ... Fewf never got caught.

We would take our skate boards to the parkade, we called smurf palace because it was Blue, and we would go to the very top level. We would lay down head first and go down the parkade ramps untill we came to the bottom. Run up and do it again. There were many close calls, we had to tuck and roll out of the way from on coming traffic. A few skate boards got crushed under cars and we would run away ... Fewf never got caught

Around the age of 13

We found the glorious and mysterious thing called fire. The way those flames would flicker it was just so intriguing for a young boy. It would almost Seductively dance in front of our very eyes. Our favourite game to play was fill a coffee can with gas, about 1” of gas, then take a rubber ball and play basket ball with the can. We did this for months with no issues, all was good an great untill we knocked the van over and flames shot to the ceiling of my friends garage. We sanded the black smoke off the rafters... Fewf never got caught

One summer day, 4 of us were playing golf in the school field as we always do. We found a magnifying glass and started to burn the grass.

“Wow cool it’s smoking !”

“Neat it’s burning now”

“Whoops flames better put it out”

We played like this for 20-30 min and putting it out each time, all of us would take our turn, the flames got about 4” round in diameter. We threw the magnifying glass and continues on with golf. Then we notice a small fire and by small I mean the size of a Volkswagen Bettle.

We watched in horror as the fire department came to put it out, it thankfully was not very big and didn’t spread. About a 16’ circle got burnt into the field... kids jokes it was aliens but we knew. I like to think it was the magnifying glass we threw in the grass, not the 20 small fires we ignited and put out ... Fewf we never got caught

Around the age of 14-15

We got in the habit of doing Nicky Nicky Nine Door. For those of you unfamiliar let me paint a picture for you. We would choose our target wisely. Normally someone we hated and ring the door bell and run like HELL ! We did this about a hundred times at least. One time we did it to a house and the door opened and out came a track and field star, I swear! He almost caught us but we ran down the alley and hid until he gave up searching .. Fewf that was close

We went into a parking garage and unscrewed the air cap, let the air out of one tire on all the cars. I would say about 100 cars. Why would we do this, hell if I know but again .... Fewf we never got caught

But .... our streak of not getting caught came to an end. One summer day, the heat was unbearable, the sweat was dripping off us. We were all at a friends house and decided to have a water fight. Water balloons got filled and tossed, hoses used outside, buckets and all .... It quickly got out of control when we had the water hose in the front yard through the front door. The water hose from the back yard through the back door and spraying each other. The carpet was soaked, walls were soaked and the couches were drenched .... in walks his parents... we were caught red handed

Remember when your kids would go to school and learn.

Life changes as it always does. All these changes seemed just as strange as life before internet, no cell phones only using a corded telephone with a 50 foot handset line, renting movies from BlockBuster Video and using dirty cash to pay for things. All these new “remember when” moments are coming our way will change life as we know it.

I remember when I got my first blackberry, like it was yesterday. For those of you that don’t know, a blackberry is a cell phone that had data and internet. I remember talking to my mom and saying

I thought it was a ludicrous idea. Well it wasn’t long before I thrived on it. Now I couldn’t imagine life not being able to fax, email, read blueprints, get customers to instantly approve change orders ect on this little hand held device. Also get this, this little computer device is also a phone.
